URBAN – private and public gardens in the city

Urban means living in the city, and people have been making gardens in cities for millennia.  Urban gardens offer the sanctuary of emotional and visual escape from the built environment and the pressures of population density.  Urban also means the unexpected – making public gardens in the awkward spaces between buildings, inside and underneath them, on their roofs – on bridges even.  Urban poses practical issues in maximising the use of limited space, and in the choice of plants to cope with often challenging conditions – from balconies in Salford to half-way across the Thames.  And there is the wider issue of greening our cities – how making gardens enhances and invigorates urban life.  Speakers: Dan Pearson MSGD, Patrick Cullina, James Fraser, Sue Illman
