Japanese Knotweed Ltd

Japanese Knotweed Ltd (JKL) is a private limited company, founded in 2010. Currently we employ over 50 staff including field operating surveyors, managed via 3 offices situated in London, Southampton, and Manchester. We work throughout England, Wales and Scotland for construction companies, developers, facilities management, housing associations, local authorities, property maintenance and private property owners. Japanese Knotweed Ltd is a safety-first contractor, holding a range of safety SSIP and industry related accreditations.

Our specialist services control or eradicate Japanese knotweed and other invasive weeds such as Giant hogweed, Himalayan balsam, other native common weeds such as Horsetail, and invasive aquatic plants.

Not just knotweed!

As well as Japanese knotweed our staff are trained to identify and effectively treat or manage other invasive weeds. Legislation and government directives place a growing emphasis to control the spread of invasive plants in the UK, which includes non-native species that can spread, causing damage to the environment, the economy, our health, and the way we live.

Some aquatic weeds also cause huge environmental impact and require specialist control services to restore ecological balance. Some can grow in mass very quickly, resulting in:

  • Destruction of fish and wildlife habitat
  • Suppression of native plants and wildlife
  • Navigational blockages
  • Impact on flood control
  • Clog drinking, irrigation and hydroelectric power water pipes.

Effective long-term control of Japanese knotweed

A Herbicide Treatment Programme (HTP) involves a methodical programme of carefully managed visits, where correctly specified herbicides are applied. With sustained applications the herbicide can exhaust the plant bringing it under effective control and preventing its further spread. We adapt our methods and herbicide uses subject to site logistics. When planning a Japanese knotweed treatment programme, we consider:

  • Proximity of Japanese knotweed to watercourses and bodies of water
  • Sensitivity to proximity non-target vegetation (trees, plants and grasses).
  • Size of the infestation and density of the stand
  • Proximity of tree roots (if using residual herbicides)
  • Proximity of badger sets or other forms of protected wildlife

This enables us to determine the best choice of herbicide and method of application, which could be knapsack spraying, stem injection or leaf wiping.

INSURANCE BACKED GUARANTEE: On successful completion of our works we are happy in most instances to provide a guarantee. As members of the PCA we can where required provide third party insurance on our guarantee. The insurance is provided by Guaranteed Protection Insurance Ltd (GPI) and provides the client with an Insurance Backed Guarantee. Guarantee periods are typically 5 or 10 years, with the insurance providing additional peace of mind that in the unlikely event the company ceases to trade, you can still make a claim under the terms of the original guarantee. The GPI Insurance Backed guarantee product is the most widely accepted product by major UK mortgages lenders.

Working with construction companies and housebuilders

HEALTH & SAFETY: As a safety-first company JKL is fully compliant with the relevant Health and Safety regulations, ensuring our staff are fully trained and our processes comply with H&S standards and legislation.

KEEPING CONSTRUCTION MOVING: Our excavation techniques are cost effective and solve every site’s requirement, and where desirable allow material to remain on site and to be re-used. Our methods of control are low risk, efficient and designed to keep your projects flowing.

PROTECTING INVESTMENTS: To ignore invasive weeds on land that you’ve invested in for development, or to treat them incorrectly, can prove costly in the long term. We work with you to devise the most appropriate remediation solution based on the proposals for the site. Our methods are fully compliant with legislation and codes of practice and ensure that your land can be remediated for its designated purpose.

REJUVENATING BROWNFIELD SITES: Whether you are at the pre-purchase stage or have already invested in a brownfield site we can ascertain via survey whether it is contaminated with knotweed or other invasive weeds and discuss options for treatment with you. Ground contaminated with asbestos or heavy metals are often a concern for remediation of these sites, however we can excavate and remove these wastes as well.

Financial incentive for landowners

LAND REMEDIATION RELIEF (LRR): Originally LRR was designed to encourage investment in land that was previously derelict or contaminated so it can be made purposeful again. It is a generous tax incentive intended to promote the remediation and development of land and buildings affected by Japanese knotweed or chemical contaminants such as Asbestos. It helps offset some of the cost of remediation services (which can include man hours on the project, such as the Project Manager) through capital gains tax relief.
