Craftsmanship and creativity in metal

A precision engineering firm working with landscaping and garden design professionals worldwide, Outdoor Design has the cutting-edge design and fabrication skills to create and install any garden feature you can imagine. Working in steel, copper, bronze and other metals, the company specialises in bespoke steel planters, structural and decorative features and architectural installations.

Established in 2001, the West Sussex based company works with many of the UK’s leading developers, landscape architects and interior designers on residential and commercial projects across Britain. It also has longstanding relationships with several major construction companies.

Every Outdoor Design product, whether it’s a simple planter or highly complex one-off installation, is designed and built from scratch, and entirely in-house. The process begins with taking the client’s design, which can be a simple sketch to a full set of drawings, to then producing a 3D CGI model using the latest CAD technology. This is essential in identifying and addressing any potential engineering and fabrication problems before submitting the final design for client approval.

Outdoor Design specialises in intricate fabrication and working with challenging materials. A recent example is a set of three free-standing leaf sculptures, 0.9 to 1.5 metres high, laser-cut in copper.

The company applies the same precision engineering skills and attention to all client projects, whatever their size, composition and complexity. On this solid bronze water feature, designed by Emily Erlam and built for Landform Consultants, absolute perfection was required. To meet this exacting standard, all welds are completely seamless, every corner is an exact right angle and the different planes and sections all intersect precisely.

More functional projects, such as these handrails for The Hub in Farnborough, are fabricated with same meticulous care. Made from hot-dipped galvanised mild steel sections, the handrails were accurately colour-matched to an existing set, and designed to be retrofitted with a hardwood top, all within the strict requirements of a Listed Building.

Everyone in the Outdoor Design team shares a confidence rooted in specialist knowledge, technical skill, and a genuine desire to do consistently brilliant, beautiful work, whatever the project. From the small and delicate to the massive and monolithic, every project is precisely engineered, aesthetically pleasing and completely fit for purpose.
