Bringing fencing to life with green screens

What if your space could enjoy all the environmental, health, and aesthetic benefits of a natural hedge, without the associated investment in time, effort and expertise required to grow and nurture it? With the use of green screens, this is no longer an issue.

Green screens are an instant green hedging screen, which can be installed with the ease of a fence, to create a natural, green setting. Whether in smaller private spaces such as gardens, or in larger scale developments in the public realm, green screens offer instant privacy and nature-inspired impact.

Green Screens contribute to biodiversity

The benefits of using a green screen in place of a fence are extensive. Living plants contribute to biodiversity, which – due to new policy being rolled out in the UK this November – is of increasing importance to local authorities, developers, and specifiers. With plant life comes animal life too, and green screens can indeed provide a welcome habitat for insects and birds, helping to support the wider ecosystems and food chains that we all depend on.

Alongside boosting biodiversity, green screens can improve local air quality, and also reduce fine dust in the vicinity by 40%-60%, contributing to a natural, healthy environment and greener urban areas – whether its benefits are enjoyed by passers-by or full-time residents; company employees or the general public.

Easy installation with biodegradable planter

The Mobilane Green Screen is a versatile solution consisting of a structural steel grid, with posts and brackets anchoring the screen into the ground, intertwined with climbing plants, which are bedded in a coconut fibre root container. Screens are 120cm wide and up to 3m tall, and can be installed as a standalone screen in a planter, or as a mile-long fence, and everything in between. Once the Mobilane Green Screen is installed, the biodegradable coconut planter completely degrades within one or two years, allowing the plant root systems to fully bed into the local soil and ecology.

The Green Screen is available in eleven plant species, each with its own unique features, suited to different contexts. For a year-round evergreen hedge, species like common ivy and silverberry are popular choices; for those contexts where more colour is favoured, there’s flowering species like star jasmine and pyracantha dart’s red; and for a deciduous hedge that changes along with the seasons, hornbeam is also available.

From commercial property to motorway

From primary schools and commercial buildings to new housing developments and infrastructure projects, the adaptability of the Mobilane Green Screen – in terms of plant species, height, and structural material – always makes them a success. ‘We wanted a natural partition with no see-through…and an instant result’ says Teunis Boer, whose food company recently used the Mobilane Green Screen at a commercial property in the Netherlands.  Similar green screens are also being deployed at neighbourhood-scale residential projects, where they can be used to quickly establish boundaries between plots, and alongside the M11 in Harlow, to reduce noise and air pollution simultaneously.

Green My School Projects

Mobilane’s ‘Green My School’ campaign is perhaps delivering the most impactful of all green screens, however, with its objective to build awareness and action around clean air in primary schools. Deployed in school playgrounds across London and beyond, the green screens are improving air quality – and along with it, concentration, hygiene, creativity, and wellbeing. ‘‘Every child will be breathing cleaner, safer air straight away,” says Simon Wattam, Head Teacher of Goose Green Primary School in Dulwich. “The Green Screen will benefit the local community with its aesthetic, environmental and air cleansing properties. A living testament to the remarkable power of nature.’’

The Mobilane Green Screen is supplied as a pre-grown hedge available in different sizes and plant types. See here for more information.
