Squire’s Rising Star

Congratulations to Matt Tanner, Assistant Manager at Squire’s Garden Centre in Badshot Lea for making it to the final 6 of the national ‘Rising Stars’ programme!

The Rising Stars programme, run by Westland Horticulture and the Garden Centre Association, is for garden centre staff across the country looking to get ahead in the world of horticultural retailing. The programme is now in its seventh year, and there were a record number of entrants for Rising Stars 2015.

Matt Tanner from Squire’s has had to go through a rigorous assessment process. Three masterclasses have been held this year, in which participants were given extensive coaching and mentoring in different aspects of retail merchandising.  Matt has been successful in all of them, and has now been announced as one of 6 finalists who will go on to do a final presentation at the Garden Centre Association conference in Brighton in January 2016, where the winner will be announced.

Sarah Squire, Squire’s Deputy Chairman commented, “The Rising Stars programme gives promising individuals in the industry a great opportunity to develop their merchandising and leadership skills. We are very proud that Matt Tanner has made it through to the final 6 contestants. It is a wonderful achievement. Matt started working at Squire’s in Woking as a Saturday boy when he was just 16. He showed great talent and enthusiasm, and went on to work at a number of Squire’s centres, including West Horsley, Cobham, and now he has been promoted to Assistant Manager at Badshot Lea. Well done Matt, and good luck for January!”
