A collaborative project between Sport England, Wyre Forest District Council and Stourport Sports Club introduces new opportunities for young professional hockey players
A new artificial turf hockey pitch was officially opened at Stourport Hockey Club on Saturday 6th July by GB Olympic Bronze medallist, Sally Walton. The newly built pitch, completed by leading UK artificial turf manufacturer TigerTurf and sports contractor McArdle Sport Tec Ltd, enables and promotes further use of the facilities for both regional and national competitions. The opening of the new pitch marks evolution for sport at Stourport; the project was part-funded by Government-led initiative Sport England Inspired Facilities, in collaboration with The Hockey Foundation, Wyre Forest District Council and Stourport Sports Club.
The project is part of the ‘Olympic Legacy’ following the London 2012 Olympics; Stourport was looking to improve facilities, maximise playing time and inspire improved performance. Stourport Sport Centre chose TigerTurf ahead of ten other artificial turf manufacturers because of Evo Pro’s exceptional playability and match execution combined with the company’s outstanding dedication to the research and development of sports pitches.
The opening consisted of an official ribbon cutting ceremony where Sally and junior teams from Stourport and Kidderminster marked the occasion in their club colours. The youngsters enjoyed a coaching session with the bronze medallist to top the day off.
Francine Moss; Facilities Manager at Stourport Sports Club comments; “The newly built pitch opens so many doors for Stourport; we are now able to host a range of regional and national competitions as one of the only local clubs that boasts three pitches. Our younger players are safer as they now do not have to cross a busy road to reach a pitch. With the hockey season now at a close we are excited for the start of the next season where we can show off our TigerTurf Evo Pro higher standard surface.”
